Ulhasnagar, Feb 23: Polling for Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) ended on February 21. The results of the UMC The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation election results 2017 will be declared today. Polling for 78 seats of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation on February 21 recorded a voter turnout of around 50 per cent till 5.30 PM. The results today will decide the fate of 879 candidates in the UMC elections. This year’s voter turnout is 8 per cent higher than the last election in 2012. In the 2012 civic polls, the ruling BJP- Shiv Sena-RPI government in Ulhasnagar won 30 seats out of the total 78 seats. the Bahujan Samaj Party won 2 seats. The Indian National Congress won 8 seats out of the total 78 seats, the Nationalist Congress party had won 20 seats, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had won one seat. Polling in Ulhasnagar on Tuesday was marred by violence as unidentified men vandalised the car in which former Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation mayor and leader of Secular Alliance of Party Asha Idnani was travelling to cast her vote on Tuesday morning. Asha Idnani is contesting the UMC polls from panel no 9. UMC municipal commissioner Rajendra Nimbalkar claimed to be happy with the turnout but said he was expecting around 60% voting, Nimbalkar initiated several campaigns to increase voter turnout in Ulhasnagar.
It was reported by TOI that during the poll, the local SAI (Secular Alliance of India) party said the election was being controlled by the BJP and not by the poll panel. Secular Alliance of India party plays an important role in Ulhasnagar’s politics. Jeevan Idnani, SAI party chief, blamed BJP supporters for attacking its workers and candidates in the city. It was also reported that Shiv Sena and BJP workers clashed at polling booths in the city.
In panel 15 of Ulhasnagar, BJP candidate Narendra Rajani accused Sena rival Dhananjay Bodare and his supporters of spreading terror and influencing voters. In the sensitive panel 7, the BJP, Sena and Bahujan Samajwadi Party workers clashed in Azad Nagar area in which some suffered injuries. Police dispersed the warring sections with a lathi charge and deployed heavy security.

In Ulhasnagar, the BJP grabbed 32 seats and Shiv Sena 25 of the total 78 seats. The NCP got four, Congress got one and independents and others grabbed 16 seats.
