New Delhi, Apr 12: The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday decided to hand over the Unnao rape case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In addition, an FIR was filed against Uttar Pradesh BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar and others on the basis of a special probe team’s report submitted to the government on the rape of an 18-year-old girl. In a midnight drama that unfolded last night soon after the developments, rape accused BJP MLA Sengar made a visit to the Senior Superintendent of Police’s (SSP) office with at least two dozen supporters.

On being confronted by the reporters, Sengar said that he had come to know if he is also named in the FIR. “Hum to ye pata lagaane aaye the ki kahin hamara naam kisi FIR me hai ya nahi (I had come to know if my name has appeared in any FIR),” he said. “I just came here to prove that I have done no wrong and would be here anytime the police wants me,” he was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times outside the SSP’s office. He asserted that he had no role in the rape and death of the rape survivor’s father.

The report submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which visited the rape survivor’s Makhi village, mentions Sengar guilty of conspiring the death of the rape survivor’s father. The BJP MLA, however, refuted all the charges saying it is a conspiracy of his enemies.

Earlier on Wednesday, the rape survivor claimed that she and her family had been placed under “house arrest”. “We are not allowed to move out, we are constantly guarded…they want us to break down,” she told reporters. “I appeal to CM Yogi Adityanath to provide me justice. The DM has confined me to a hotel room, they are not even serving me water. I just want the culprit to be punished,” she said.

Also, the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of the case following the custodial death of the victim’s father and said that the body of the rape victim’s father should be kept safe.

“Kuldeep Sengar raped me at his house, he promised me a job then and threatened to kill my family. He didn’t allow us to study, kept my family under his thumb,” she said. She also claimed that Sengar’s brother killed her father. A video too surfaced on Wednesday in which the rape victim’s father is heard saying that he was assaulted by Sengar’s brother Atul in the presence of the police.

MLA Sengar’s wife, Sangeeta, also spoke out today and insisted her husband was innocent. She said her entire family would end their lives if her husband was proved guilty. “There’s political motive behind this. Make my husband & girl (rape victim) undergo narco test. My daughters are traumatised. We’re being mentally harassed. No evidence has been presented yet, still he’s being labelled as rapist,” she said.
