New Delhi, April 12: The Unnao rape case inquiry was handed over to the CBI following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention, said sources on Thursday. Earlier in the day, UP DGP had informed the media that the case had been handed over to the CBI.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal took a jibe at the Prime Minister over the party’s day-long fast. He said Modi should rather speak up against the cases of violence against women. Referring to the Unnao case and that of Kathua where an 8-year-old girl was gang-raped and killed, Sibal said, “Why don’t you fast against incidents of rape? And tell the people you are feeling bad about the incidents of rape and fasting?” He asked how the PM was “silent over the incidents of rape in Unnao (UP) and Kathua (J&K)”.

During the day, some ministers came out to speak on the case. Maneka Gandhi assured that “justice will be done,” while Satyapal Singh said, “The SIT has submitted its report and strict action would be taken against the guilty. I do not know how much he (Kuldeep Singh Sengar) is involved in the case, sometimes allegations are proved wrong also.” Bairia MLA insisted that narco test should be conducted on accused party MLA Sengar as well as the complainant. He said, “I have heard this same girl filed a false rape case against another man some years back.” Senior BJP leader I.P. Singh tweeted that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wanted Sengar arrested but he was stopped by an “influential person”. Later he deleted the tweet and went incommunicado.

While an FIR was filed against Kuldeep Singh Sengar under the POCSO Act and other relevant sections of the IPC, the rape survivor hoped justice would be done. She said she feared for her uncle’s life and was afraid that Sengar would try to influence the probe as well.  She also questioned why Sengar hadn’t been arrested. The same question was raised by the Allahabad High Court too. The court would be pronouncing its order at 2pm on Friday.

Speaking to Zee news, Sengar’s nephew also asked for a narco test, “so that the truth comes out”.
