Lucknow, July 29: Congress is set to make a huge political statement in Uttar Pradesh, launching its first mega rally in the poll-bound state. In the high-tech event scheduled in Lucknow today, the keynote speaker would be party vice president Rahul Gandhi. Senior Congress leaders, including party president Sonia Gandhi would also be present. Chief Ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit, UP Congress head Raj Babbar, and state incharge Ghulam Nabi Azad would also address the rally. The public meeting, promoted as ‘UP Udghosh’, is expected to be attended by a total of 50,000 party volunteers, workers and supporters. However, the suspense continues whether Congress’ star attraction Priyanka Gandhi would be present at the event.

As per the latest reports, there is now word on Priyanka attending the grand show of strength being organized by the Congress party. However, there has been no official denial made by the party yet. The confusion is seen among the party workers as well, who might end up being disappointed if Priyanka chooses to skip the rally.

The public meeting comes in the aftermath of the three day bus yatra conducted by Congress from Delhi to Kanpur, covering 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Largest rally organized by Congress in recent times

Galvanizing the party workforce is something whose credit should be given to strategist Prashant Kishore. The team of Kishore has reached out to the workers of 9000 polling booth in the state, and have divested their energy from the past 4 months to recharge the cadre strength of the party. The impact of this groundwork exercise would be seen at today’s rally, when Congress would be able to gather a mammoth 50,000 volunteers for one single event. Such a show of strength in Uttar Pradesh politics has only been during the joint rallies of Dalit leaders Kanshi Ram and Mayawati.

Rahul Gandhi would hold an interactive session

Through the preparations being made for the rally in Lucknow, reporters have learnt that the stage of the rally would be 10 feet high, and the dias would be large enough to accommodate 120 leaders on the stage. Below the dias would be 100 feet long platform, where Rahul Gandhi is expected to move while delivering his speech. He would also be taking questions from the senior Congress workers, who would be seated on the front rows. This would be the first occasion when a party leader would hold a Q&A session in a conventional rally.
