Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election Exit Poll Results 2017, senior journalist Prannoy Roy and Rajdeep Sardesai, who travelled across the state, concluded that the BJP has the best chances of winning Assembly polls. Another senior journalist who covered the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Barkha Dutt, however, suggested that BJP’s vote share will go up and SP’s vote share could fall. She didn’t predict that the BJP will get the highest number of seats.

Polling for the final round of the seven-phased Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections concluded on Wednesday. Over sixty per cent polling was reported across seven districts of Uttar Pradesh in the final phase of state assembly elections. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections witnessed high-voltage poll campaign by three major contenders – the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). While Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi led the SP-Congress campaign, the BJP banked on the popularity of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BSP supremo Mayawati campaigned for her party across the state.

Samajwadi Party aims to retain power in Uttar Pradesh with the help of Congress, while the BJP and BSP desperately want to make a comeback after 15 and five years. The outcome of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections assume significance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as BJP’s victory in the largest state of the country will give a major boost to his plan for 2019 Lok Sabha polls. A defeat in Uttar Pradesh will send a message that people didn’t see him as the same leader for whom they voted in 2014.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly election is equally important for Congress and Rahul Gandhi. Congress desperately wants to make a comeback after back-to-back debacles since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Several questions will be posed on the leadership of Rahul Gandhi if the Congress fails in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Mayawati, being her party’s star campaigner, campaigned extensively in Uttar Pradesh. In these 32 days, she addressed 53 public meetings across the state and all the public meetings drew large crowds. Mayawati, who worked on consolidation of dalit-Muslim votes, gave the largest chunk, 98 tickets, to Muslim candidates.
