Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017: Congress, Samajwadi Party to hold joint press conference at 5:30 pm in Lucknow
The coalition between Congress and Samajwadi Party will officially announced.
Lucknow, Jan 22: After announcing the Manifesto on Sunday, Samajwadi Party and congress will hold a joint press conference at 5:30 PM in Lucknow. The coalition for upcoming assembly election is likely to be announced in the press meet. As per media reports, Samajwadi Party has offered the Congress to contest 105 seats whereas Samajwadi Party will contest 298 seats. Uttar Pradesh Assembly comprises 403 constituencies.
In an earlier development, the alliance between two reluctant parties was announced only when Congress President reportedly intervened into the matter by calling Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Congress was demanding 120 seats for the assembly elections. The political developments had turned interesting when senior Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal said that the alliance between two parties is likely to be snapped.
Commenting on the matter, Uttar Pradesh Congress unit chief Raj Babbar said that while every effort should be made to ensure that coalition between Samajwadi Party and Congress is made but it should not compromise the aspirations of workers working for the party.
Both parties have been striving to forge an alliance with each other. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav expects that he will be able to beat anti-incumbency for the party with the help of congress in the state. The Congress asserts a significant influence within the Brahmin Community in the state. One of the reasons for fielding for former chief Minister of Delhi Shiela Dixit was to consolidate its Brahmin vote bank. However, it failed to convert the influence in the number of winning seats.
Congress, on the other hand, is expecting to increase the number of winning seats in the state. It has been out of power for last 27 years. The last Chief Minister for Congress party in the state was Narayan Dutt Tiwari who recently made his son join BJP. He is also an aspirant for the ticket in Uttarakhand Assembly Elections from Bharatiya Janta Party. Congress could manage to win only 28 seats out of 403 seats in the state. The Congress party is hopeful of increasing it’s no of seats on the back of support of Muslims and Yadavs that Samajwadi Party traditionally enjoys.
Uttar Pradesh will have seven-phase polling this time too. In the first phase of polling on February 11, 73 assembly seats will go to poll. The last date for filing the nomination for the first phase of polls is January 24 and will be taken up for scrutiny on January 25. The nominations can be withdrawn till January 27. The counting and results will be out on March 11.
