Raebareli, Feb 17: It is the last day of campaigning on Friday for the third phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Voting for 69 Assembly seats will take place in the third phase of assembly elections in the state on February 19.
Meanwhile, campaigning for the fourth and fifth phases is on in full swing. Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi will accompany her brother and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi at his election rally in Raebareli on Friday. Raebareli, a Congress stronghold and Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s constituency, will go to polls in the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on February 27.
On Wednesday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah launched a scathing attack at the Congress, alleging that the ‘first family of Indian politics’ is responsible for keeping Amethi backward since independence. “Rahul baba asks Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give an account of what he has done in past 3 years. I want to tell Rahul baba that entire Amethi wants to know what Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul baba did in past 60 years. Will you give the account for past 60 years?” he said.
Earlier on Thursday, Textile Minister Smriti Irani had taken a jibe at Priyanka Gandhi saying the Congress star campaigner was not campaigning in Amethi as she was afraid of the questions that people might ask her. Even as the BJP said she had all the right to question Priyanka Gandhi’s absence from Amethi, the Congress lashed out at Irani saying she must not interfere in their party’s campaign strategy. As quoted by ANI, Congress leader PC Chacko raked up Irani’s education qualification row, saying that if not answering queries was an issue, then the Union Minister had a lot to answer for herself. “When Irani was the HRD minister, there were so many queries about her wherever she went. There is a case pending about her educational qualification in the court. She herself gave a direction to the concerned department that her education details should not be given to the RTI. If she does not want to answer these queries then she shouldn’t be in politics at all,” he said, adding that it was none of Irani’s business where Priyanka decided to campaign.
The first two phases of polling were conducted in Uttar Pradesh on February 11 and 15. The remaining five phases will take place between February 19 and March 8. The counting of votes will take place on March 11.
