Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2017 LIVE: 57.36% voter turnout recorded till 5 PM in the fifth phase

Lucknow, Feb 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati are all set to address rallies in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh ahead of the sixth phase of Assembly elections 2017.

The Prime Minister will be addressing the public in Mau district while, Akhilesh Yadav will hold public rallies in various constituencies covering the sixth phase.

As reported by news agency ANI, a senior police official on Sunday had claimed that there is a threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s life during his visit to Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district.

As per Mau ASP RK Singh, Rasool Pati, who is an accused in the Haren Pandya murder case, and his associates have hatched a plan to attack the prime minister’s cavalcade with rocket launcher and explosives due to which the security in the district has been beefed up. Mau assumes significance as Mafia-don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and his son Abbas Ansari are in fray on BSP tickets.

Reportedly, the Prime Minister has already addressed 15 rallies for the BJP since the announcement of the schedule of the seven-phased Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2017.

With the successful address of rally in Mau, the Prime Minister will be fulfilling an old promise to the people of the district. He could not address a rally in Lok Sabha elections in 2014 after one of the party’s veteran leaders passed away before the political rally.

The elections in the state began on February 11. Till now, four phases of the polls have been conducted peacefully with each, recording over 60 per cent voter turnout. The polling for the fifth phase of elections is underway on Monday. The polling in the state will conclude on March 8 whereas, the counting of votes will be held on March 11.
