Lucknow, Apr 9: The father of the woman who alleged that she was raped by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and his accomplices, died in police custody in Unnao on Monday. The man’s daughter and other family members attempted suicide outside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence in Lucknow on Sunday. While his family has accused the police of killing him, the district hospital authorities say that he was admitted after he complained of uneasiness.”He was admitted to hospital last night by police after he complained of abdominal pain and vomiting. He passed away in early morning hours,” said Dr Atul, District hospital.
Following the man’s death, two police officers and four constables have been suspended and four people accused of beating the rape victim’s father have been arrested. The DIG, Law & Order, said that a magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the incident. “If lapse found on the side of police, action will be taken. The incident happened while the man was in judicial custody,” he added.
The man’s family has accused the BJP MLA, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who allegedly raped his daughter, of having gotten him murdered in police custody. The alleged rape survivor’s father was arrested after the Sengar had registered a case against him.
The woman and her family had attempted suicide in front of the Chief Minister’s residence on Sunday. “I was raped. I have been going from pillar to post for one year but no one listened to me. I want all of them arrested otherwise I will kill myself. I had even gone to the CM to no result. When we lodged FIR we were threatened,” she said.
The woman alleged that she was raped in June 2017 but all her attempts to seek action against the MLA failed. She also alleged that her father was beaten up by Sengar and his accomplices, who threatened them to take their complaint back.
However, Sengar denied the allegations, saying it was conspiracy to malign his image. “It is a conspiracy hatched by my political opponents to tarnish my image and damage my reputation… I have no problems with any probe. Let a probe be conducted, and the guilty be given the stringent punishment. If I am found guilty in the probe, I am ready to face the punishment,” the BJP MLA said.
