New Delhi, Dec 28: The much awaited Uttarakhand Assembly Election 2017 is scheduled to take place on February 15, 2017. The year 2017 is crucial for both Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) as well as Congress as both the political parties will aim to win with thumping majority. Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi on Wednesday announced that all the 70 constituencies of Uttarakhand will go to poll in single phase . He mentioned that the counting in all five poll bound states will be held on March 11, 2017. During his press meet, Zaidi said the model code of conduct will come into immediate effect and the Election Commission is determined to ensure strict compliance.

The parties that are in power in Uttarakhand are Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Progressive Democratic Front. The Congress Party has seen a sharp decline in the last couple of years and hopes to gain a stronghold on Punjab this time while it also focuses to continue being in power in the hilly state Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Currently, Uttarakhand is under the leadership of Harish Rawat who belongs to the Congress Party.

There are a total of 70 seats of the Vidhan Sabha in the state of Uttarakhand. As per announcement made by Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi, the last date of notification for Uttarakhand Assembly polls is January 20. The last day of nomination is January 27. The completion of scrutiny of nomination will be held on January 28 while withdrawal of candidature is scheduled to be on January 30.

The Central security forces will be deployed in all poll bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur including Uttarakhand to maintain law and order and to see to it that the election processes run smoothly. Along with the ruling Congress party in the state, the other contenders for the upcoming polls are BJP, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (Progressive) and independents.

The last elections were held on 30 January 2012 and results were announced on 6 March 2012. In the 2012 polls, the Indian National Congress emerged as the largest party with 32 seats in the 70-seat legislature while the Bharatiya Janata Party with 31 seats served as the official opposition. The Congress party formed the government with the help of Bahujan Samaj Party, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (P) and Independents.

The Bharatiya Janata Party fought the 2012 election under the leadership of its Chief Minister Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri while the main opposition Indian National Congress was led in the assembly by Harak Singh Rawat.

The Election Commission encourages the use of social media. Of the new measures taken by the Election Commission, booth or kiosk set up by candidates will be included in candidate expenditure. Moreover, the candidates will also be required to open accounts in banks and expenses above Rs. 20,000 will be made out of this bank account, and made through cheque. Postal votes will be transmitted one-way in certain constituencies. In its historic step, the Election Commission is joining the rank of global leaders in the area of electronic transmission of votes.
