Uttarakhand enters Limca Book of Records, builds 8,000 toilets in 20 days

Rudrapur, Oct 26: Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar has scripted history by constructing 8,000 toilets in just 20 days. This national record has paved way for Udham Singh Nagar into Limca Book of Records. Under the Swacch Bharat initiative that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd October 2014, Uttarakhand has set its big time record. As per reports by TOI, these 8000 toilets were constructed in 351 gram panchayats of the district from January 25, 2016 to February 15, 2016.

The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched throughout length and breadth of the country as a national movement and every state pledged to ensure cleanliness across their state. While leading the mass movement for cleanliness, Modi exhorted people to fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a clean and hygienic India. As per reports, US Nagar has to achieve a target of 76,016 toilets in the rural areas to be declared open-defecation-free (ODF). As per recent reports, 64,613 toilets have been constructed in seven blocks of the district until now.

Talking to TOI, Srivastava informed that the district is moving quickly to meet the targets and will soon be declared ODF. “It is quite encouraging that our efforts have made it to the Limca Book of Records,” he added. District magistrate (DM)Chandresh Yadav said that the district has performed well  while blocks of Kashipur and Jaspur were declared ODF in June, while Rudrapur and Gadarpur were declared ODF in October.

The District magistrate informed that the administration is also running campaigns to bring awareness on cleanliness in the society. Citing an incident, Yadav said, in September refused to move in with her in-laws because they did not have a toilet. She when back again after three days when the toilet was constructed. The brave lady was honoured by the district administration on Gandhi Jayanti for this dauntless act. Earlier, a Uttar Pradesh youth named Abhishek Kumar Sharma had travelled around 15,000 km on his bicycle for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and arrived in Puducherry.

It was Swajal Pariyojna who carried out the construction work. She was awarded the certificate on October 13, 2016 whereas the then chief development officer (CDO) of the district, Dr Ashish Srivastava has also been recognized in the certificate. Areas namely Rudrapur, Jaspur, Kashipur and Gadarpur have already been declared ODF. The district administration is hoping that the remaining blocks of Khatima, Sitarganj and Bazpur will also be declared to be ODF soon.
