Tamil Nadu, April 16: A woman professor at a private college– Devanga Arts College- in Aruppukottai near Virudhunagar has been suspended temporarily after a group of girls in the college drafted a complaint against her, alleging that she lured them into doing sexual favours for higher officials of Madurai Kamaraj University in exchange for marks and money.

The girls reportedly recorded a phone conversation on March 15 that went viral on the social media. But the incident came to light on Sunday after a Tamil news channel broadcast the college’s response to the girls’ complaint.

On March 19, the girls had filed a harassment complaint with the college against the teacher. The teacher works as an assistant professor in the Mathematics department. Reports say while the teacher accepted it was her voice in the phone conversation, she claimed the students had misunderstood her.

As per a TV report, the accused teacher said that no records were there in the college for her suspension but after the enquiry session, she got to know that the suspension was because of the audio recording. They (college authorities) will further investigate the matter, she said. “I admitted it was me on the phone but the girls wrongly understood my words and messages,” said the teacher.

According to reports, the college held a press conference on Sunday where they announced that action had been taken against the errant teacher. College secretary R.Ramaswamy, who held the conference, said, “As soon as we received the complaint from students, we suspended the teacher. A committee has also been set up for an investigation into the matter and the college will take further action based on the committee’s outcome.”
