Chennai, Nov 14: A 22-year-old woman died after a stalker set her on fire in Chennai. Her mother and sister, who tried to save her, also sustained serious burn injuries.

The incident occurred in Adambakkam area in Chennai on Monday night.  The woman identified as Sinduja was working in an IT company. She was rushed to Kipauk Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The accused Akash lived near Sindhuja’s house. The accused used to come to their house and talk with them. He had proposed to the victim a few months ago. He began harassing her after she rejected.

The accused, a college dropout, threatened her parents as well as they were looking for a groom for Sindhuja. They posted advertisements for the right match on matrimonial websites. Provoked by this, he committed the crime.

On Monday night, he came to their house and picked up a fight with Sindhuja. He then poured petrol on the victim and set her afire. Mother Renuka and sister Nivedhika rushed to save her, but they themselves sustained serious injuries. Renuka was admitted to hospital with 50 per cent burns, whereas Nivedhika suffered 20 per cent burns.The accused Akash was nabbed by neighbours who had come to their rescue after hearing their cries.
