New Delhi, Apr 17: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha has once again come out all guns blazing against his own party’s government at the Centre. In a column published on the morning of April 17, Sinha has blasted the Narendra Modi government over several issues ranging from economy, safety of women and foreign policy to ‘threat to democracy’ and more. Sinha has appealed to leaders in the BJP to “pick up courage, and speak up and save democracy and the country” in a column, ‘Dear friend, speak up’ for The Indian Express.

In his column, Sinha began with saying how the BJP has completed four years in power and has, hence, gotten enough time to prove itself. He went on to say that the BJP had made tall promises in 2014 to come to power and had envisioned a changing and developing India, but it lost the plot.

Sinha began with attacking the Modi government over economy. He questioned the BJP government’s claim of India being the fastest economy. He asked how a country that is witnessing huge bank frauds, distressed farmers, youths without jobs and non-performing assets in banks could be the fastest growing economy. Sinha also hit out at the Modi government over cases of rapes and minority issues. He said that the government, instead of acting against rapists, is being apologetic towards them. Speaking about the foreign policy, Sinha said that “frequent foreign visits by the prime minister and his hugging foreign dignitaries, whether they like it or not” sums it up, adding that there has been no substance in those visits.

Sinha concluded with pointing out that the most concerning thing is the “threat to democracy”. He said, “The party headquarter has become a corporate office where it is impossible to meet the CEO.” He also accused the BJP of controlling the media and social media. He also said that Modi should have sat down with the Opposition leaders when Parliament was not being able to function, but he did not take the initiative.

He warned the Modi government saying that if the Opposition unites, the BJP will lose the Lok Sabha elections 2019. Sinha has asked BJP leaders like LK Advani and Murli Manohar also to speak out on burning issues.” I am appealing specially to Advaniji and Joshiji to take a stand in the national interest and ensure that the values they have made such unparalleled sacrifices to uphold are protected and preserved for future generations and corrective steps are taken in time,” he said.
