YC Modi to be NIA Chief as Director Sharad Kumar Retires Next Month; Had Investigated Godhra Riots Cases

Modi will hold the post until May 31, 2021. He is currently a special director in the Central Bureau of Investigation.

New Delhi, September 18:  YC Modi, the Assam-Meghalaya Cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) 1984 batch officer, has been appointed as the director general of National Investigation Agency (NIA). He will take over from Sharad Kumar whose terms as NIA chief ends on October 30.

The officer was a member of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team that probed the 2002 Gujarat riot cases. He had investigated three important post-Godhra riots cases: Gulberg Society, Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam.

He has held several important posts including the Additional Director General of Police in Shillong and Additional Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Department of Personnel And Training (DoPT) said that the appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet.

Modi will hold the post until May 31, 2021. He is currently a special director in the CBI. He was appointed as an additional director in 2015.

YC Modi probed two sets of cases in Gujarat during Narendra Modi’s tenure as chief minister. The first case was the murder of Haren Pandya in 2003. The Gujarat high court acquitted all 12 people who were convicted by a POTA court.

The second set of cases contains Gulberg Society, Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gaam. The SIT gave a clean chit to Narendra Modi.

YC Modi has been appointed as an officer on special duty (OSD) in NIA with immediate effect for smooth transfer of responsibilities. This means he will exit the CBI where he was in charge of the anti-corruption branch of headquarters. He has investigated high-profile cases like Sheena Bora murder, the Antrix-Devas deal, the Vyapam scam and the Srijan scam.
