Smoking Banned from October 2ndRelief at last for Passive Smokers
If you're a chain smoker, you're in for some really rough time come October 2nd - the long gestating new rules for the ban of smoking will be implemented on Gandhi Jayanti. The 'Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules' by the Union health ministry kick starts in October 2 would ban tobacco consumption in all government or private buildings. Sweating over what 'public places' means? Keep sweating, for the list is this - small cafes, restaurants, schools, pubs or discotheques, stadia, airports, hospitals and bus stands. In you're caught smoking in the above places, you'd have to to shell out Rs 200. And that's just the first few days, because the fine would later be revised to Rs 1,000. And the public places that allow employees to smoke within their building premises would have to cough up Rs 5,000 per employee caught smoking. Smokers' only refuge would be the road or parks. Also, under the new rules, cigarette and bidi packs will feature either a glossy photo of infected human lungs or an X-ray plate of the chest of a cancer-sticken man. Packets of chewing and smokeless tobacco products will flaunt a graphic image of a scorpion that depicts cancer. Smoking on the road or the park will save others from the wrath of passive smoking. 250-300 million Indians consume some form of tobacco. And around 14.1% of school-going children have started to smoke. Health minister A Ramadoss said, "Research has shown that smoking would kill 10 lakh people in India annually from 2010. At present, we estimate that 40% of India's health problems stem from tobacco use. So a smoking ban is essential to save India's future. A similar smoke-free policy introduced by England and Scotland last year saw 45,000 people giving up smoking in just 10 months" We completely agree with Mr Ramadoss. So if you're a smoker and you think Mr Ramadoss is merely blowing smoke, you can expect the Smokeys showing up in your face brandishing Rs 200 chalans as smoking guns. September 9, 2008

Good, atleast some people may be saved. Everyone should support this initiative.
Dear Friends,
I am proud to be an Indian, and always will be. all though I work in Germany my heart is in my Mother land, I don’t care what people think and talk about my Country, but they don’t understand that after freedom of only 61 years this country has developed and regained its potential to stand face to face to any other nation in the world, we produce our own Automobiles, Transport, Food you name it and it is there, but after all this we still fail in just one thing that is education, with education I mean education not of Books but of way of living, like they say even a smallest person could turn the course of future similarly just a little bit of caution like no smoking in the public places well this is not the knowledge that need to be forced on to people this is what we all need to think from within, similarly garbage we could keep our streets clean by just being a little careful and not throwing it any where we walk or we drive, would anyone like to throw garbage in any where in there house NO! the same way India is our Mother land out Home how can we throw Garbage any where we feel like, this very small things could make our country look so beautiful and clean, I don’t think that it will be so difficult for us to change our mentality and just think once before throwing Garbage on the streets “would I do this in my home and if still your soul replies yes the don’t stop throw it where ever you want but then do the same for just one day in your house”I am sure you wont feel like walking in that house for that day then how can we walk on the streets that is so dirty, well I know I took a lot of your precious time but my hear cries when any one talks bad about my Mother land, lets take this one more step towards the better future it will not cost us any thing but in return will reward us with a clean and beautiful country (INDIA),

Has Ramados stopped smoking or as a matter of fact Drinking alcohol.
What he wants to prove ... just to create a social reformer image .. he is doing that ... there are huge number of people denied of basic health facilities in India...has he tried religiously to do something for it.
How many states of India have 0 rate of child death , death of women bearing child... just to make news this is no news to rational mind ... I can never give him any point just to push this ... he is useless if he is not able to achieve a 100% basic health facility to the citizens of the country.
Does he have an explanation of what will he do after collecting the penalty from the offender
Allest i will stop smoking after this.
Thank you GOVT.
ok....so your gonna stop smoking all thanks to the government..
so im guessing the next time you want to quit something your going to ask the governmet to implement a ban????
and im sorry to say but you seem to have no will power at all....
Very happy to see Indian Govt improving.. Thank You Govt for your valuable decisions !!!!
I am student who just started smoking 10 months back....and this is the right time to stop smoking n i'll do it....
thanq...Govt. of India!
I can't believe there are some people who are actually arguing against this! Like a couple of posts before this there is someone talking about other health facilities that the Govt hasn't paid attention too. All I want to say is that there is always such a person, who doesn't seem to be content with whatever big or small steps the Govt takes. Being a smoker myself, and slowly turning into a chain smoker, I find this ban as a boon to all of us. For all these years we as Indians have held the Government responsible for not dealing with important issues head-on, and the day they decide to nip a problem in the bud, we complain!!!
this is so ridiculous it isnt even funny!! of course there's no arguging it cuz it been done however.....
this smoking ban that everyone is so excited about is a contrary 2 what we say is a democracy....whatever happened 2 the freedom of expression....
great moe 2 avoid new smokers but wht abut the ones who do smoke?
might as well get hitler to reign over india!! disusting...as for people who support this ban smoking belief u should exhale smoke on their faces!
ok....so maybe this initiative is really good...but the restrictions need a little modifiations...
at the end of the day...a smoker will find some mean or the other to smoke...its an individuals decision..
and what about the pollution in the country??? pertol smoke is even worse!!! are they goig to ban the use of vehicles in public places soon??? whats about the crackers that will be exploding soon for diwali??? how much smoke does that give out??? isnt that of any concern..??? why dont they restrict that too???
implementing a ban for the benifit of the country is good...but it has to be praticle at the same time...otherwise it makes no sense
well according to me it seems it is really ridiculous as smoking has always been a matter of choice of an individual weather or not he wishes to smoke so it is really stupid of the government to take this step
reg
What about non smokers when you blow the damn smoke on them?
does this smoking includes hookah smoking also
Yeah Lol
that's all i can say. The only "good thing" that came out of this ban was that NOW everyone knows who Ramadoss is. Great publicity stunt and even better herd mentality. All we indians need is a leader, and we will follow him blindly. Just like the mess up with the dance bar issue, where the government so proudly I should say, shut down bars and pushed 100's of women from dancing to prostitution, this is just another mistake and a very big one at that. Americans have done it ! so it must be right. Wake up people ! We are a developing country ! We haven't developed yet ! We have BIGGER problems at hand ! And for those of you patriotic indians who are SO GLAD than someone is saving the day .. think again !! More people in this country probably die of hunger and lack of living amenities than people who die of cancer. Maybe our "government" should help them first ? Do you people really think that apart from Bombay and Delhi, these big cities, anyone even cares about the cigarette ban ? NO ! Nobody even heard of it. How long is it going to be before the cops start taking bribes from bar and club owners to not interfere ? Gosh, we must be really stupid. Indians are said to be hard working and intelligent, so put on your thinking caps and think for a change. At this point in time, the government needs to focus on the bigger problems thatthe rural areas are facing. Imposing stuff like this to gain popularity in urban areas is pathetic.
if cigerate vendor can provide a lighter or matchbox to lit the cigerate, can enforce department execute the challan on him?????????? can anyone give the answer for me
Why does one persons whims and fancy be given so much importance?
I have a few questions here...
(a) where all can I smoke?
(b) If Ramadoss is really worried about the public breathing foul air, why does he use a vehicle at all? ban all vehicles emitting anything other than H2O
(c) Why is religion permitted in public places? As my smoking is injurious to your health, your religious practice is injurious to me & my kids mental health. Impose same amount of restrictions on religious practices too (And I'm damn serious about this one.. want to file a PIL on this... any help would be welcome email anpodd@rediffmail.com)
(d) If the govt is so morally/ethically correct why does it want nuclear power plants? Dont they know that burning carbon fuel is still reversible by nature (plant like organisms do it) but nuclear reaction is irreversible (no form of natural reaction can put it back to the state it was in) moreover have you seen the byproducts of the process...
(e) The govt should take a big freakin hike
This ban is ridiculous, and I agree completely with Mr anonymous. Govt officials spit on the roads - who's gonna stop them? Do they have any regard for the 'no spitting' signs? And yes, the point about crackers and diwali was"bang on"! A smoker will find a way to smoke, irrespective of this ban.As for organisations, they'll probably ensure their "smoking lounges" stay a well hidden secret. Afterall, is Mr Vincent Nazareth going to do the rounds of every office in the city? This has turned into a gimmick and a matter of joy for all non-smokers. Is there any 'smoker' on the board who's created this ban? Anyway, let's see how long this craze lasts.
At last smoking's cum 2 an end!!....its been ages since i've waitd 4 dis!.....n allas it came 2 an end!!.....thnk u GOVT!!...4 takin such a valuable decision.....i hope slowly spittin n othr indescent habits b banned soon..n i know it will!!.......hpe INDIA bcums even more cleanr!!
by ANONYMOUS!....BYE..
Ban of smoking in companies does not work...why does govt want to interfere if the company has it's own smoking zones with all the reqiured specifications ?? smoking spoils health agreed .. however people want to smoke .. so why does the govt interfere ??
The govt should interfere only if it is causing problem for others .. Tell me honestly when an employee smokes in the office premisis in the specified "Smoking Zone" , why will a non-smoker have to visit it and later accuse him of making him passive smoker.
BOSS!!!!!!!!!!!! WHEN GOVT IS NOT SENSIBLE , THEN PEOPLE WOULD COME TO THE ROADS TO SMOKE AND GOVT COULD DO NOTHING TO STOP THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOVT WAKE UP AND REMOVE THE BAN FROM COMPANIES IF THEY HAVE PROPER SMOKING ZONES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My neighbour(residing just below us) is a chain smoker. He smokes standing in the balcony or in the stair case releasing obnoxiuos smell causing massive discomfort to us... specially to the aged asthma patients. Requested several times but continues this behaviour. Does the new law provide any cover in such cases specially when residential buidings (flats) are involved?
