New Delhi, Oct 9: Top Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) commander Umer Khalid was gunned down by a joint team of security forces in Ladoora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla town today. Khalid was a top ranked militant who carried a cash reward of nearly Rs 7 lakh on his head.

Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police SP Vaid said it was a major breakthrough for the security forces as the militant was involved in many attacks on security camps in north Kashmir as well as targeting policemen in particular.

According to reports, Khalid’s girlfriend helped the security forces nab the dreaded terrorist.

Khalid’s Girlfriend Wanted Revenge

Some time last year, a woman walked into the office of a top Jammu and Kashmir Police officer’s office. The woman claimed she was in a relationship with JeM commander Mohammad Khalid but wanted him dead as he has cheated her.

“I will lead you to his tracks, you do the rest (in killing him). I want him dead,” a report in India Today quoted the Kashmiri woman, in her early 20s, telling the police officer.

The woman revealed the whole story on being prodded by the top cop. A year ago, the woman discovered that she was pregnant. Elated, she broke the news to Khalid. However, she was left heartbroken when the terror commander told her to go away.

The woman had to undergo abortion in Jalandhar, Punjab. she returned to her home in the Valley a few weeks after. Incensed over what Khalid did to her, she pledged to make him pay.

Working on leads provided by the woman, the security forces trapped Khalid on several occasions but he somehow managed to escape. However, he ran out of luck on Monday, October 9.

According to sources, Khalid, who was a Pakistani national, had a lover boy image and had two, three girlfriends even now.

The Encounter

Giving details of the encounter, the police said security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Ladoora area following information about the presence of militants in the area.

Information regarding Khalid presence in the area is said to have been provided by his scorned girlfriend a few days back.

The search operation turned into a gun battle when the militants opened fire on the search party, the police said, adding more troops were rushed to the area to prevent the militants from escaping.

The Jaish commander was killed in the encounter, they said. The police is also probing his role in the recent attack carried out by the Jaish-e-Mohammed on BSF battalion headquarters near high-security Srinagar airport and attack on the District Police Lines at Pulwama.
