The 6th and the second biggest phase of election in the country has begun at 7 am today. 117 constituencies from 11 states and 1 Union Territory are going to polls today with some big names from all the political parties in the fray. The states like UP, Bihar, Assam, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, J&K and others are among the states that will undergo voting. The electoral fortunes of 188 candidates in 12 constituencies of UP, including 20 women contestants will be decided today. Prominent among the 78 candidates in 6 constituencies of West Bengal whose electoral fortunes would be decided today are President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit and Mamata Banerjee’s bete noire, union minister Deepa Dasmunshi.

Polling is being held in following 19 constituencies in Maharashtra- Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Raver, Dindori, Nashik in North Maharashtra, Jalna, Aurangabad in Marathwada, Palghar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane in Thane district and Raigad, besides all the six constituencies of Mumbai North, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai South Central, Mumbai South, Mumbai North East and Mumbai North West. Prominent candidates in the poll arena include PWD Minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal (Nashik), Union minister Milind Deora (Mumbai South) of Congress and Water Resources Minister and NCP leader Sunil Tatkare (Raigad).

In Bihar 6 constituencies, a total of 108 candidates are in the fray in Supual, Araria, Kisanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Banka and Bhagalpur with the prominent among them being BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, NCP General Secretary Tariq Anwar and RJD leader Mohammad Taslimuddin.

Voting began amid tight security for 7 Lok Sabha seats of Chhattisgarh in the third and final phase of elections wherein around 1.18 crore voters will decide the fate of 153 candidates, including Union minister Charandas Mahant and BJP state unit president Vishnudeo Sai.

Voting began on Thursday morning in all 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu and the lone seat in neighbouring union territory of Puducherry in the single phase elections where names like A Raja, Dayanidhi Maran, Mani Shankar Aiyar are in the fray.

Polling began in six Lok Sabha constituencies in the third and final phase of the elections in Assam on Thursday. Among the 74 candidates in the fray are AIUDF chief and sitting MP Badruddin Ajmal, Congress candidate Wazed Ali Choudhury and BJP’s Debamoy Sanyal, Assam Tourism minister Chandan Brahma of BPF and sitting BPF MP S K Bwismuthiary.

The five LS seats where polling is underway are: Dausa, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli—Dholpur and Tonk—Sawaimadhopur LS seats. Over 81 lakh voters are eligible to elect 5 MPs from 81 contestants, including two union ministers; Namonarayan Meena (MoS finance) from Dausa, Jitendra Singh (MoS—sports) from Alwar, and former cricketer Mohd Azaharruddin from Tonk—Swaimadhopur.

Polling for Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir began on Thursday amidst apprehension of low voter turnout due to killing of four political workers in a week’s time and incidents of stone pelting on some polling booths. There was no voter at polling stations in Kakapora and Pampore in Pulwama district, which is part of the Anantnag constituency, at 7.00 am.

Although 12 candidates are in the fray for this Lok Sabha seat spread over 16 assembly segments in four districts, the contest is expected to be a direct fight between ruling National Conference candidate Mehboob Beg and opposition PDP president Mehbooba Mufti.

Names like Hema Malini from BJP, Milind Deora from Congress, Medha Patkar from AAP, Amar Singh from RLD, Dimple Yadav from SP and A Raja from Congress are in the fray and their luck will be sealed by the voters today. Smooth polling has been seen since morning while some of the known faces could be seen among the early voters.
