We have Kangana Ranaut to thank for some really controversial and shocking headlines that we have seen in the past few weeks. However, this week has been different. Priyanka Chopra, despite not being in India, stirred up quite a storm when she spoke about Sikkim in one of her interviews in the west.
Her comment about the state said, “This (Pahuna) is the first film ever that’s come out of that region, because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations.” The actress received a lot of flak on social media for making such a strong statement, which was wrong. Following the furor, she tendered an apology to the Sikkim government.
In her apology, Priyanka said, “I’m sorry I have to write to you under these circumstances.. but I needed to clarify my stance in regards to the situation which has arisen due to a comment of mine during an interview for my film Pahuna, which was misunderstood. My comment was misconstrued. I was talking about the Sikkimese film industry and also the subject of the film, where I mentioned how Sikkim was grappling with the refugee situation caused by insurgencies.. I had meant by the ‘neighbouring countries’ .. I am fully aware that Sikkim is an incredible host nation (sic) to so many refugees and our film shows exactly that through the children’s point of view…” Well, we hope that people of Sikkim are able to forgive the actress for what she said.
Another actress who was in the news for a scandalous reason was Riya Sen. An MMS from her upcoming web series Ragini MMS Returns went viral as soon as it got leaked. It starred the actress in a steamy love making scene with co-star Nishant Malkani. She is making a comeback to showbiz with the horror-thriller web series.
However, the media seems to have decided that we have not had enough of Kangana Ranaut and therefore she continued to be in news. From Aditya Pancholi asking her to furnish the FIR copy of her police complain against him or publicly apologise made headlines this week. However, soon there was a video with an eyewitness relating incidents of one night where she saw Aditya punching a helpless Kangana Ranaut in the middle of the night, on the road. Just a day before the release of her film Simran, we also saw Apurva Asrani leak details of the conversations between him, Simran director Hansal Mehta and Kangana that make the fall out and the reasons behind it evident.
However, the film has opened to mixed reviews but fans and critics have raved about Kangana Ranaut’s performance. Earlier this week, she also starred in AIB video The Bollywood Song that got thumbs up for getting all that is wrong with the film industry and the way it treats women on point! The actress certainly is having the last laugh.
And now, to talking about some hot men in the industry. Salman Khan has finally wrapped up his part for Tiger Zinda Hai. The actor, who hadn’t tweeted or Instagrammed anything about the film till now, tweeted and informed fans about the Abu Dhabi schedule coming to an end, officially kick starting the Tiger Zinda Hai season. The film is set for a Christmas 2017 release and we might get to see the first look poster and/or teaser next month.
Talking about this week’s releases – we saw Kangana Ranaut’s Simran and Farhan Akhtar’s Lucknow Central hit screens. Despite being two different films belonging to unrelated genres, what’s common between these is both star two brilliant actors, failed by a weak story. While we at least saw the best of Kangana in Simran (full review), Farhan’s character had the potential and scope to shine but wasn’t given the chance. But he was supported by a good ensemble cast and together they made Lucknow Central (full review), which was like a 2.0 version of Qaidi Band, a bearable watch.
Coming up… next week we have Shraddha Kapoor’s Haseena Parkar, Sanjay Dutt’s Bhoomi and Rajkummar Rao’s Newton hitting screens on September 22. While this is an important film for Shraddha in a way that this is the first time she is trying something so different, it’s a special film for Dutt since this is his comeback film! Newton has already released to audience in the west and has received raved reviews. But it looks like a film that will appeal to a niche audience.
That was all from Bollywood this week (September 11-September 15). See you next week with more shocking and rocking updates from around B-town.
