New Delhi, Oct 16: Controversial Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sangeet Som’s remark over Taj Mahal has triggered a huge backlash with  All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi questioning whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi would stop unfurling national flag at Red Fort.

Highlights

  • BJP MLA Sangeet Som stirs massive controversy with remark over Taj Mahal.
  • Taj Mahal was built by 'traitors', says Sangeet Som.
  • Will PM Modi stop unfurling national flag from Red Fort, asks AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi hitting back at Som.

Responding to Sardhana MLA Sangeet Som’s remark that Taj Mahal was a ‘blot’ on Indian history and culture as it was constructed by Mughals who plundered the country, Owaisi asked will PM Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath would ban tourists from visiting Taj Mahal.

“If what he (Sangeet Som) says is true that Taj Mahal is symbol of traitors, built by traitors then why is Mr. Modi goes to Red Fort and hoists national flag on a place which built by traitors? Owaisi asked.

“Will Mr. Modi stop hoisting national flag from Red Fort. Will Mr. Modi stop hosting foreign dignitaries in Hyderabad House which was also built by traitors,” the Hyderabad MP added.

What Sangeet Som Said

Speaking during a public event Sangeet Som, who had been booked for hate speech in 2013, said Taj Mahal was a ‘blot’ on Indian culture built by ‘traitors’.

“Many people were worried that the Taj Mahal was removed from the list of historical places in the UP tourism booklet. What history are we talking about? The man who built Taj Mahal imprisoned his father. He wanted to massacre Hindus. If this is history, then it is very unfortunate and we will change this history,” Som said.

Politics Galore

Sangeet Som’s remark received sharp rebuttal from leaders cutting across party lines. Even his senior party colleague Nalin Kohli disowned Som’s comments.

“Taj Mahal is an important part of our history. It’s part of incredible India,” Kohli said.

Congress leader Shakeel Ahmad accused Sangeet Som of “spreading venom”.

“A former Director of a “Halaal Meat Export Firm” is spreading venom against “Halaal Meat Eaters”, by using the name of iconic Taj Mahal,” Ahmad said on Twitter.

Samajwadi Party leader Juhi Singh also criticised the BJP MLA for making such inflammatory remark. “Don’t create controversy around Taj Mahal. It brings lot of revenue,” Juhi Singh said.
