Ugadi also was known as Yugadi is the New Year for the people of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and the spring festival will be celebrated on March 28, 2017. The festival falls on the first day of Chaitra month according to the Hindu calendar, and on the same day, the people of Maharashtra celebrate Gudi Padwa. Ugadi marks the beginning of the New Year in some parts of the country and holds a lot of importance and significance in their life. The festival of harvest, good will, prosperity and happiness is the beginning of a new age. ‘Yugadi’ or ‘Ugadi’ is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘yuga’ which means age and ‘adi’ mean starting.

According to various legends, it is said that on the auspicious day of Ugadi, Lord Brahma created the universe and Lord Krishna was also killed in the forest on this day, which marks the end of Satyug era and the beginning of ‘Kalyug’. On this occasion, people consume neem leaves and celebrate the New Year. They even take oil bath which is popularly termed as Abhyanga and decorate their houses with torans and rangolis. It is believed that purchasing any new thing on this day is considered auspicious and brings good luck.

On the day of Ugadi, people prepare the Ugadi Pachadi also known as Bevu Bella is a paste of raw mango, neem, tamarind and jaggery. The taste of the dish is sweet and sour and symbolises that life is a beautiful combination of happy and sad events.
