New Delhi, Feb 12: A 24-year-old law student died in hospital after he was allegedly thrashed by a group of men at a restaurant in Allahabad. The deceased identified as Dilip Saroj slipped into a coma after being attacked with bricks and iron rods on Saturday.
His death has triggered an outrage on social media after videos of the incident shot by passerby was widely shared on WhatsApp and Facebook. On the basis of the video, one of the three suspects was arrested. Speaking to a leading portal senior superintendent of police Akash Kulhary said that three policemen, including the Katra police outpost in-charge were also suspended for negligence.
“Munna Singh Chauhan, a waiter seen attacking Saroj on his head with a rod in a video, has been arrested. Restaurant owner Amit Upadhyay has been detained too. Three more accused, including a railway ticket checker named Vijay Shankar of Sultanpur, are at large,” Kulhary informed Hindustan Times.
If reports are to be believed, the deceased and two of his friends had gone for dinner at Kalika restaurant. They were sitting on the stairs after placing their order when they allegedly had an argument with Shankar, who was having dinner with two friends. Following the altercation, Saroj and his friends hit the trio with chairs.
The men also attacked waiter Munna, who retaliated by hitting Saroj on his head with a rod. “Shankar and his aides then attacked Saroj with rods and bricks,” Kulhary told HT.
Saroj was then taken to private hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav hit out at Yogi government saying the murder is an indicator that law and order had worsened in Uttar Pradesh.
