7.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Atlantic Ocean, northwest of Ascension Island

Aug 29: A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 has struck the South Atlantic Ocean, centered far northwest of Ascension Island, seismologists say. There was no immediate tsunami warnings triggered by the quake.  The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), the USGS said. There are no reports of any damage or casualties.

The earthquake, which struck at 0430 UTC on Monday, was centered about 964 kilometers (599 miles) north-northwest of Georgetown, which is the chief settlement on Ascension Island. The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami along the U.S. Atlantic or Gulf Coast. (ALSO READ: 7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Indian Ocean, no tsunami alert yet)

Earlier this month, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred at the southern Atlantic Ocean. The quake was centered at east-southeast of the remote British-administered South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. It is situated about 1,000 kilometers east of the Falkland Islands. Further details are awaited in the earthquake.
