Beijing, Oct 11: China has asked the United States to respect its sovereignty after a US warship entered the waters of South China Sea.

China’s foreign ministry said that the US Navy missile destroyer Chafee entered the Chinese waters near the Sansha islands on Tuesday. The Chinese administration sent its own vessels and aircraft to issue warnings. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said that the Chinese ships asked the US ship to leave.

Hua later said that the US vessel violated the Chinese and international laws. She further said that the ship also undermined China’s sovereignty and security interests. She said that China was firmly opposed to the US action and that it lodged a diplomatic protest. The US Navy has not confirmed it as the freedom to navigate operation as yet.

A US navy spokesperson refused to confirm the operation but said that the US will fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allowed.
