Barcelona Terror Attack: Key Suspect Moussa Oukabir Shot Dead; Here’s All we Know so Far

Barcelona, Aug 19: The prime suspect in the Barcelona attack Moussa Oukabir was shot dead on Friday by police, according to the reports. Police had earlier said that they were looking for four men including Moussa. Police have also said that the terrorists were planning an even bigger attack but went to carry out a simpler attack following an explosion at a house in Alcanar on Wednesday which deprived them of bomb material. The ISIS took the responsibility of the Barcelona attacks, saying that the twin attacks were a reaction to air strikes in Syria.
After the attacks were reported, US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Theresa May, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the terror attacks in Barcelona.
HERE’S IS WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR IN THE BARCELONA ATTACKS
On Thursday, at 04:50 local time, a white van rammed into people, on Las Ramblas. Las Ramblas is a famous boulevard in central Barcelona and was packed with tourists at the time of the attack.
The eyewitnesses say that the driver of the van zig-zagged to hit as many people as possible.
The attack killed 13 and injured over 100 people. The police said it was a terror attack.
About eight hours later, an Audi A3 smashed into pedestrians in a seaside resort town of Cambrils.
The second attack killed one woman and injured six other including a police officer. was killed in the second attack.
The Audi overturned and five people, apparently wearing suicide belts, got out of the van. They were shot by the police; four of them died on the spot and another one later died of his injuries.
The police believe that the two attacks were linked.
The key suspect was 17-year-old Moussa Oukabir. He said to have used his brother’s documents to rent the van that was used in the first attack in Las Ramblas.
His brother Driss was arrested in Ripoll on Thursday.
Of the five attackers, two have been identified as Said Aallaa, 18, and Mohamed Hychami, 24. The police are searching for a fourth suspect, Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22.
“They were preparing one or several attacks in Barcelona and an explosion in Alcanar stopped this as they no longer had the material they needed to commit attacks of an even bigger scope,” said Catalonia police official Josep Lluis Trapero, reports BBC.
Although ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying its soldiers carried out the attack, it didn’t provide any evidence to back up their claim.
