Dubai, Oct 8: A 27-year-old electrician Jamie Harron from Stirling has been jailed in UAE since July for public indecency. Jamie was imprisoned for three months for touching a man inappropriately and drinking alcohol at Dubai’s Rock Bottom Bar. However, in his defence, Jamie’s legal team said that he briefly made a contact with the man while he was trying to prevent his drink from spilling.
As reported by news.sky.com, the man, Jamie touched, got him arrested 20-30 minutes later after the incident. Reports say, Jamie was kept in Al Barsha prison for five days before being released on bail. He was also asked to spend more than £30,000 in charges and legal fees.
Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai said that it is quite shocking that Jamie Harron is held in the country for so long and it is another example how vulnerable tourists are to arrest and kept in detention in Dubai. Radha informed that she spoke to Jamie and he is under a lot of pressure and stress, reported news.sky.com.
A spokesperson from Foreign and Commonwealth Office said that they are in contact with a British man following his arrest in Dubai in July and are providing consular assistance.
On Jamie’s sentence, Radha further added, “He was expecting to appear in court this Sunday, but the court moved the date without telling him or his lawyer. This led to a sentence of 30 days’ imprisonment for failing to present himself at the hearing”.
