Earthquake Detected in North Korea Hours After Kim Jong Un Regime Threatens Another Nuclear Test

Beijing, Sept 23: An earthquake measuring 3.4 magnitude on the richter scale was detected in North Korea, claimed China’s Xinhua news agency. The tremors from the North were reported a day after the state’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho suggested another nuclear test could be conducted by Pyongyang.

Highlights

  • 3.4 magnitude quake struck the North at 8:30 hrs (GMT).
  • No injuries were reported.
  • Seoul's weather agency says the tremor may not be the result of a suspected missile test.

China’s earthquake administration said the tremors in North Korea were felt at 08:30 hours (GMT). The quake was recorded at a depth of 0 km at the surface.

The previous earthquake, measuring 6.2 magnitude, struck the North last month after the Kim Jong-un regime tested the atomic hydrogen bomb.

However, South Korea’s state weather agency says there is insufficient ground to assume today’s earthquake in the North to be linked to another missile test. Its initial view was that it was a natural earthquake.

As Pyongyang continues to move ahead with its nuclear programme, tension builds up in the Korean Peninsula. Japan and South Korea, the two closest allies of US in the region, have claimed threat from the spree of missile tests conducted by the North.

The United States has also warned military crackdown against the Jong-un regime, if it does not retract with its nuclear programme and adhere to the United Nations’ resolution, which debars the testing of nuclear missiles.

President Donald Trump, while issuing another sabre-rattling remark against Jong-un, called him a “madman” who will starve his people to built weapons. “He will be tested like never before,” Trump added.

The remarks of the US President evoked sharp reaction from Jong-un. The North Korean dictator said Trump would “pay a heavy price” for his statements.

“I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire,” Jong-un was quoted as saying by state-run KCNA news agency.
