Kabul, January 10: Kandahar governor and UAE Ambassador to Afghanistan were among seventeen injured in an explosion that rocked the provincial government guest house in Kandahar. According to Al Jazeera at seventeen people were injured and eleven others were killed in a fresh attack that rocked the city on Tuesday evening.
UAE ambassador Juma Mohammed Abdullah al-Kaabi, Kandahar Governor Humayun Azizi and their bodyguards were among those injured in the attack, government spokesperson Samim Khpolwak, who was also injured in the attack, told TOLO news.
Samim reportedly said, at least four Arabs, who were bodyguards of UAE Ambassador, were among those killed in the attack. There are reports that Kandahar Governor has been admitted to the city civil hospital in serious condition. The explosion took place when there was a high-level meeting going on at the guest house.
Following the attack, the UAE foreign ministry issued a statement saying that “following the heinous terrorist attack on the guesthouse of the Kandahar governor which resulted in the injury of his excellency Juma Mohammed Abdullah al-Kaabi, UAE ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and a number of Emirati diplomats”.
Kandahar police chief, General Abdul Raziq, who is also known as the most feared anti-Taliban commanders in Afghanistan, was also present at the meeting. Abdul Raziq was unharmed during the attack.
According to Al Jazeera reports, the diplomats were in Kandahar on a humanitarian mission, were expected to open a number of UAE-backed projects as part of an aid programme to Afghanistan.
The attack took place few hours after twin explosions rocked the Kabul city which killed at least 25 people and injured many. Soon after the attack, Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the earlier bombing, near parliament complex. Tuesday morning’s explosion took place close to the American University and Noor Hospital on Darulaman Road.
On Tuesday morning the first explosion happened outside the parliament where some workers were killed and wounded. The attack was a suicide bombing where the bomber came at the spot wearing a suicide vest. The second attack was carried out by a car bomb, which was parked on the crowded street.
