Knife Attack Spree Continues, 8 Injured in Russia’s Surgut, Suspect Gunned Down

Moscow, Aug 19: In the fourth major stabbing incident in the past three days, a man in Russia’s Surgut attacked pedestrians using a sharp-edged knife. At least eight are reported to be injured in the knife assault. The prime suspect was subsequently gunned down by the local police.
The victims were rushed to the nearby hospital. According to state news agency RIA Novosti, at least two among those who were attacked are in “critical condition”.
According to Russia Today, the stabbing incident occurred at around 11:20 hours local time (06:20 GMT).
The attacker, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, has been “liquidated”, said Russia’s Investigations Committee. However, the motive of the attack is yet to be determined. No publication has yet linked the stabbing case to an act motivated by religious extremism.
The TASS news agency, quoting local police, said the attacker could had been suffering from mental illness.

The knife attack in Russia comes a day after two similar stabbing incidents were carried out in Finland and Germany, which led to the death of three civilians.
On Thursday, in a major stabbing assault in Spain’s Barcelona, 14 people were killed and four suspects gunned down by the police. The incident was later confirmed as an “act of terror”. Middle East-based terror outfit Islamic State, or the ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attack in its mouthpiece Amaq.
