Mogadishu, June 14: A suicide bombing has just occurred outside a popular restaurant in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, followed by heavy gunfire witnesses present at the spot posted on social media. At least 10 people are reportedly dead and several others are injured in the suicide attack that took place at a restaurant famous among tourists.
After the bombing witnesses present at the spot saw people screaming and the leaving the Posh Hotel – the only venue with a discotheque in the capital, news agency Reuters reported.
“The suicide car bomb targeted hotels entrance. There is gunfire inside the hotel. But I am not sure if fighters are present inside,” said Mohammed Hussein, a police officer told Reuters.
Captain Mohammed Hussein also said that there was a confusion over whether the gunmen have forced their way inside the restaurant after conducting the blast and whether a hostage situation was underway at the Pizza House restaurant.
“The explosion caused a huge inferno inside the famous Pizza House Restaurant. Sporadic gunfire can still be heard,” a local journalist present at the spot tweeted. It is still not clear how many people are injured in the deadly attack but some reports suggest that around 10 tourists were injured.
Al-Shabab, a Somalia-based extremist group often targets high-profile areas of Mogadishu, including hotels, military checkpoints and areas near the presidential palace. The terror group has also woved to intensify attacks after the recently elected government launched a new military offensive against it.
In 2017, Al Shabab last year became the deadliest Islamic extremist group in Africa, with more than 4,200 people killed in 2016.
