London, Dec 6: The British police have arrested two men for planning to blow up the Downing Street gates and assassinate the Prime Minister the United Kingdom Theresa May in London. Two Muslim Islamist suicide bombers, armed with an improvised bomb, suicide vest, pepper spray, and knives, have been charged with terror offences. The terror attack was foiled after a joint operation by Scotland Yard, West Midlands Police, and MI5.
20-year-old Naa’imur Zakariyah Rahman and 21-year-old Mohammed Aqib Imran were arrested after raids in London and Birmingham. They are due to appear in Westminster magistrates’ court on Wednesday. The plot to assassinate PM Theresa May was revealed to the Cabinet by MI5 head Andrew Parker. He informed the Cabinet that a total of nine terrorists attacks were foiled by the security agencies in last year.
“The Prime Minister led thanks to the tireless work of staff at MI5 to combat the unprecedented terrorist threat,” said Theresa May’s spokesperson, adding, “Cabinet ministers heard that while Daesh suffered major defeats in Iraq and Syria, this did not mean the threat is over. Rather it is spreading to new areas, including trying to encourage attacks in the UK and elsewhere via propaganda on social media.”
The MI5 head said that the security service and the UK police have foiled a total of 22 terrorist plots in the past four years and there are more than 500 live investigations ongoing.
More details awaited.
