Damascus, June 19: Russia has issued a fresh warning against the United States led coalition in Syria stating that it will view its aircraft’s as targets after a Syrian military plane was shot down by the coalition.
The coalition on Sunday said that it had shot down the Syrian Su-22 after it had bombed US-backed fighters in Raqqa province on Sunday. Russia which is the main ally of Bashar al-Assad said that it was also halting communications with the United States aimed to prevent such incidents in future.
The Syrian government also condemned the America’s “flagrant attack”, and said that these types of attacks will have some “serious repercussions”. The incident comes at a time when the United States led coalition and its fighters present on the ground are fighting against the Islamic State (ISIS) in its Syrian stronghold of Raqqa.
After the incident, the Russian Defence Ministry also issued a statement. The statement said, “Any aircraft, including planes and drones belonging to the international coalition operating in the west of the Euphrates river, will be tracked in the sky by anti-aircraft forces of Russia and on the ground and will be treated as targets”. The defence ministry also condemned the downing of the jet and said that the act was a violation of international law.
“As a result of the strike, the Syrian plane was destroyed. The Syrian pilot catapulted into an area controlled by ISIS. His fate is unknown,” the statement further read.
The incident is seen as the latest skirmish between the US-led coalition and regime forces in Syria’s northern and eastern region.
