Washington, July 21: Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary, resigned from his post on Friday. Spicer submitted his resignation to United States President Donald Trump. According to US media reports, Spicer informed Trump about his disappointment over the appointment of New York financier Anthony Scaramucci as Communications Director.

Spicer’s resignation came shortly after Scaramucci took over the job at 10 AM (local time) today. According to US media, Spicer told Trump that he was committing a “mistake” by appointing Scaramucci as the Communications Director.

Trump reportedly appealed Spicer to reconsider his decision. However, Spicer was firm to resign from the post, which he took over on December 22, 2016. The 45-year-old Republican strategist was also the acting Communications Director, after the resignation of Mike Dubke from the post in late May. Scaramucci, who has not played the role of a political communication director before, takes over the designation of White House Communications Director amid the ongoing allegations against Trump of being hand-in-glove with Russian officials in the run-up to the US Presidential elections. The White House plays a crucial role amid the ongoing drip of stories about Trump’s campaign committee’s alleged links with Moscow.

Scaramucci, in the past month, was appointed as the vice president and chief strategy officer of Export-Import Bank. The revered financier’s new role as the Communications Director comes with little experience in the realm. However, the 53-year-old shares a year-long experience in defending Trump in the press. During his campaign, Scaramucci appeared on several news shows defending the economic policies of Trump.

In terms of political experience, Scaramucci has long been associated with fund-raising programmes of various Republican leaders, dating back to 2012 US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. He later raised funds for former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. Scaramucci was initially part of Bush’s team in the run-up to the US presidential elections. However, he jumped over to Trump’s camp.

The US President had earlier appointed Scaramucci as a member of the executive committee of Trump’s transition team after winning the poll against Hillary Clinton. He was roped in to lead the Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs. However, Scaramucci reportedly did not discharge his duties due to the pending sale of his hedge fund.
