Born on February 8, 1941 in Bikaner, Rajasthan, Jagjit Singh made his career as a ghazal artist and is also the reason for several other ghazal singers to emerge to the limelight after people developed a widespread love for ghazals.
Along with his wife, Chitra Singh, the late Jagjit Singh created unbelievably melodious tracks album after album, year after year and etched their names in the minds of people with a niche crowd becoming a mainstream audience. Hosh Walo Ko Khabar Kya for Sarfarosh (1999) and many other soothing ghazals have also been featured in popular songs and at times, the ghazal has had a unique impact on the movie goers with the urge to relate the movie with the song.
Jagjit Singh was awarded the Padma Bhushan in recognition of uplifting the art of ghazal writing and singing for the Indian and global audiences.
Jagjit Singh not only composed tracks, he has been a music director and director as well with his most popular creations featured in albums like Forget Me Not and films like Saath Saath and Arth.
On his birth anniversary, we applaud the musical genius of Jagjit Singh as we drift away slowly to a never ending playlist of his tracks, not being able to decide which should come first so shuffle the playlist and rest assured, you won’t have to make an effort to forward a track.
Here is a humble collection of Jagjit Singh’s ghazals from film and his albums over the years.
Chitthi Na Koi Sandesh
Honton Se Chuu Lo Tum (Live version)
Jaane Woh Kaise Log the
Hosh Walon Ko Khabar Kya – Sarfarosh (1999)
Koi Fariyad Tere Dil Main
Ye Daulat Bhi Le Lo (Woh Kagaz Ki Kashti)
Tum Ko Dekha Toh
Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho
Tera Chehra Kitna Suhana Lagta Hai
Dukhi Man Mere – Jagjit Singh
Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye
Tere Baare Main Jab Socha Nahi Tha
Kabhi Khamosh Baithoge
