Aamir Khan is an actor par excellence. If his name appears in a film, it goes without saying that it’ll turn out to be a blockbuster hit. Such is his level of dedication and precision, when it comes to his films. The actor has donned the hat of a filmmaker and a producer several times in the past, besides being a talented and versatile actor, and to say that each of them managed to impress the critics and audiences alike wouldn’t be a gross exaggeration. As he turns 53 today, we bring to you a list of 5 films, that have in the course of time, turned out to be real game changers in Bollywood.
Aamir Khan starrer ‘Rangeela’ happens to be one of the finest and popular films produced in the 1990s. Helmed by Ram Gopal Varma, this romantic comedy had made every man pine for a woman like Urmila Matondkar, and women fall in love with the adorable, street-smart, Munna aka Aamir. Munna was a stark departure from the chocolate boy lover roles he played earlier. Aamir portrays the character of Munna with so much ease that its almost difficult to see him as a star persona. This was indeed one of his best performances till date.
Seventeen years ago, Ashutosh Gowarikar made Lagaan —a rustic narrative of oppressed villagers who won a cricket match against a team of disobliging and difficult British officers. The film took the nation, and to some extent, even the world by storm. This was the first film bankrolled by the ‘Aamir Khan Productions’ banner. This film made its cut to becoming one of those niche movies that has a great impact on the youth, cutting across age, gender, language and culture. It was even nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
3. Dil Chahta Hai
Helmed by Farhan Akhtar, Dil Chahta Hai was a first of its kind film on friendship and relationships and brought in a new wave of change in Bollywood in the years to come. Perhaps, that’s why it is quite a refreshing watch every time we see it. One can and will never get bored of the film. While everyone associated with the film, did a fabulous job, Aamir’s role as a complete brat was much appreciated by his fans. Only someone like he could pass off as a college pass out with that kind of ease. This definitely turned out to be a cult movie that wonderfully captured the youth in their 20s and their relationship dynamics. Never before had we seen a film like this.
4. Rang De Basanti
Seldom do we come across a movie that has a huge impact on the minds of the youth and stays with them over the years. Rang De Basanti was one such film. Helmed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, the film starred Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan, Kunal Kapoor, Siddharth, Soha Ali Khan in pivotal roles. The film invoked a sense of nationalism and patriotism among the youth, inspiring most of them to do something for the country. Again, this was a one-of-a-kind film that has stayed with the audiences over a decade since it was made.
Dangal created history by becoming one of the biggest money-spinners of 2016. Not only did it turn out to be a mega block buster in India, but also showed phenomenal performance in China, where Aamir has a huge fan following. The film is a biopic on the life of Indian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat enacted by Aamir Khan, who goes against society, tradition, and the patriarchal culture to train his daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat to become world wrestling champions. This movie addressed important issues such as gender equality, feminism and heroic patriotism. However, we were thoroughly impressed by Aamir Khan’s massive physical transformation for his role in the film. After all, he is called Mr Perfectionist for a reason!
