Coming here you were probably expecting a monologue on ‘content is king,’ a term that I’ll try to define as I avoid using it. 2017 has been a splash-of-cold-water-in-the-face for Bollywood as the audience was harsh at everything that wasn’t up to the mark. Hell, there was a mighty fall of biggies this year as the likes of Shah Rukh Khan (Jab Harry Met Sejal), Salman Khan (Tubelight), Ajay Devgn (Baadshaho), whose amongst a number of other films tanked at the box office.
Eventually, no matter if the story is based in a big town or small, if the story is not good enough, the film is not good enough. In an age where the likes of Akshay Kumar have turned to propaganda based films in order to drive content that is relevant, then you know they mean business. By content, one has to focus not dances, songs and clothes of the actors – but their characters, what drives them, why they wear the clothes they wear and what is their purpose in the story. The story comprises of a lot of factors, and the film industry (finally) has had a rude awakening of it. And in a year where complacency has cost bags of money, we should expect more from the coming year. Talking about the films that knew this already, we list some of them down to celebrate their success – which stands greater than their box office collections:
