Box Office Hero: Salman Khan is the new King Khan with Rs 500 crore collections for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo & Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Move over Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan is the new King Khan! The nickname has been reserved for Shah Rukh Khan for a long time now, but it looks like Salman is taking over. The Bollywood superstar is not only back as a romantic and action hero, but is also ruling the box office in India and overseas. He is the new king of Bollywood! Salman’s latest film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is minting money at the box office, and how! Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has already crossed Rs 330 crore at the worldwide box office, and it’s still running in theatres, which means its collections are growing. Salman’s Diwali 2015 is a huge superhit, and threatens to take over his own blockbuster earlier this year – the lovable Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Trade is abuzz that if you combined Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo box office collections and his Bajrangi Bhaijaan box office collections, it adds up to more than Rs 500 crore! In fact, it goes up to more than Rs 600 crore, if all the collections are taken as they are reported. Bajrangi Bhaijaan collected Rs 310 crore in its final box office, and  Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is Rs 330 crore worldwide for now. Which makes Salman Khan the most bankable hero of 2015, with over Rs 600 crore of business as the year comes to an end!

Of course, it helped that Prem Ratan Dhan Payo released in almost 5,000 screens in India in Hindi and South versions, and in over a 1,000 screens overseas. The film opened to huge collections at the box office despite mixed reviews. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is Sooraj Barjatya’s comeback movie with Salman Khan. The two debuted together in Bollywood with Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Salman as lead hero and Sooraj as director. The film also stars Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Deepak Dobriyal, Armaan Kohli, Swara Bhaskar and Anupam Kher, among others.

Salman Khan stars in a double role in the film based on the book The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope. It was a double treat for fans who just can’t get over Salman in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. The movie is still running in theatres and by the looks of it, the box office collections could reach astronomical figures if Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s Tamasha – the next release – turns out to be a dud.

This clearly means that Salman Khan is on his way to dethrone Shah Rukh Khan from the post of box office king of Bollywood, at least in 2015. Unless, of course, Shah Rukh Khan‘s Christmas release Dilwale collects Rs 600 crore at the box office. Do you think that’s possible? Right now, Aamir Khan‘s Dhoom:3 is the highest grossing Bollywood movie worldwide with Rs 500 crore collections. That’s just a single movie and that record is hard to beat, even for Salman this year!
