Manto – the much talked about Nandita Das directed biopic that tells the life story of yesteryear Pakistani poet and writer Saadat Hasan Manto, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2018. The film will be screened at the French Riviera during the festival that will be held between May 8 and May 19. The film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role. The film has been shortlisted at the Un Certain Regard category which features 20 films which all bring on screen some unique stories using non-traditional narrative. Nandita is ecstatic about the film going to Cannes 2018 and she shared the news with her fans on social media site Twitter.

Announcing the selection of Manto at Cannes 2018, Nandita Das said, “We are in Cannes!! #Manto is selected in the official section- Un Certain Regards. Exciting moment for the entire crew & cast,” the director of Manto, Nandita Das wrote on Twitter. The film also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin who will be seen Manto’s friend, Shyam Chaddha. He was also the Urdu writer’s confidant and inspiration for many of his stories. Rasika Dugal will be seen in the role of Manto’s wife Safia, and Rajshri Deshpande will play another author – Ismat Chughtai.

Cannes Film Festival 2018 is in its 71st year and will open with Asghar Farhadi’s Spanish-language thriller Everybody Knows, starring Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Ricardo Darin. Films like Gilles Porte’s documentary The State Against Mandela and The Others, 10 Years in Thailand and Wim Wenders’s documentary Pope Francis – A Man of his Word are also some of the films that have great buzz around them and will be screened at the Cannes International Film Festival 2018 next month.
