Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! music review: Expect the unexpected in this hatke album

Dibakar Banerjee is known for his cinematic excellence. The intelligent filmmaker has floored us with almost all of his directorial endeavours so far. From Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! to Khosla Ka Ghosla and from Love Sex Aur Dhokha to Shanghai, Banerjee has been dishing out movies that are as thought-provoking as they are entertaining. His forthcoming release Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! starring Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role looks amazingly hatke and very promising, and so does its music.

The film is set in World War II torn Calcutta during the 1940s and follows the first adventure of Byomkesh Bakshy, fresh out of college, as he pits himself against an evil genius who is out to destroy the world. Using his wits against the most villainous arch criminal the world has seen, Byomkesh operates in a world of murder, international political intrigue and seduction. Before this cinematic treat hits the screen, we decided to review the music of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!

The Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! music album opens with the song Calcutta Kiss. This club track is high on tempo, and certainly very high on its classiness. Imaad Shah and Saba Azad’s vocals do justice to this feet-tapping number. Visually speaking, Calcutta Kiss is equally appetising, as it creates the charm of old Calcutta (now Kolkata). It definitely has the zing that can lift your mood!

Bach Ke Bakshy is yet another experimental number that utilises Sushant’s fine dance moves and exploits his finesse in acrobatics as well. Very upbeat, and indeed very catchy, this peppy number has been beautifully juxtaposed with montages from the movie. We liked it!

Chase in Chinatown is another pacey number that befits the thriller and the mood of urgency. Heavy vocals of Vyshnav Balasubramaniam, Sandeep Madhavan and Manas Ullas simply merge with the mood.

Byomkesh in Love provides the much needed romantic breather in a movie that revolves around murder mysteries. This semi-classical romantic ballad is really beautiful and you will start humming it soon after you hear it for the first time. Rishi Bardoo creates a perfect mood, the residue of which lingers for a very long time.

Life’s a Bitch is yet another interesting number. Mind you, this film borders on noir so dark characters and their evil intentions as well as the result of their desperate actions have been very well captured by this song that has a hint of desperation and angst.

Our verdict: All in all, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is really hatke with its heady cocktail of different compositions, moods, tone and textures. Just like the movie, the music too has been crafted to please those who have a hatke palate.
