Jallikattu ban: Kamal Haasan, Surya, Simbu vs Vidya Balan, Virat Kohli, John Abraham

Jallikattu has been a subject of war for the South people since days and now it has even reached here in tinsel town. The famous traditional Bull festival Jallikattu is facing ban and the people from the South Indian Film industry are just not happy with it. The festival has been a part and parcel of Tamil lifestyle and now the call for its ban is not welcomed by the locals. The South stars are all out protesting against the ban including Kamal Haasan, Simbu, G V Prakash Kumar, Khushbu Sundar and many more. However, stars here are against it and people who are supporting the ban are Vidya Balan, Sonu Sood and Virat Kohli!

It happened so that in May 2014, the apex court put a ban on this practice due to animal welfare issues. However, on January 8 last year, Indian Government passed an order that Jallikattu should not be included in the ban of the activities using the bulls and thus the ban was reversed. But then again on January 14 the same year, the court continued with its ban and that caused the protests against the ban!

Here is what top Kollywood stars are saying about the ban, as the Pongal is nearing when Jallikattu is held!

Kamal Haasan (at the India Today Conclave South 2017) : It is not jallikattu as it was earlier called yerithazuvudal, which means to embrace the bull. I am one of the very few actors to have played jallikattu and I want it to be allowed. If jallikattu has to be banned, why not ban biryani?

Simbu: Jallikattu is the cultural symbol of the state and it is our pride too. We have been practicing this art of valour for years, and it is utterly disgraceful when some groups and individuals manage to misguide and misinform the authorities of the governance and Judiciary on this art that is considered a cultural symbol of our state. I am awaiting to see the raging bulls and the courageous men together in the arena promoting the sport of valour this Pongal itself. After all this is our festival, our culture and our sport.

Surya: Jallikattu is the tradition of Tamils and it should not be banned!

Khushubu Sundar: As a true blooded Chennai-ite, I have been living here for the last 30 years and I personally feel that we need jallikattu. It is not just about the traditions, but about the misconception that people in the North have about the bull.

Chinmayi Sripada: After extensive research on the subject, I understood that it has a lot of cultural association and yes, there have been unfortunate incidents in the past. Because too many negative connotations are associated with the sport, it is seen as a evil deed. With proper regulation and monitoring, jallikattu can be conducted.

Well despite so much of support for JalliKattu, there has been a staunch protest against it too! According to Peta India, Sonakshi Sinha, Jacqueline Fernandez, Bipasha Basu, John Abraham, Raveena Tandon-Thadani, Vidyut Jammwal, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Kapil Sharma, Amy Jackson, Athiya Shetty, Sonu Sood, Richa Chadha, Vidya Balan, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan signed the petition to uphold the ban! People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called for people’s say to ban this and these stars are all for it!

So as there is this intense ‘bullfight’ going on between the stars from tinsel town and the stars from South film industry, we don’t know what is the faith of Jallikattu this Pongal. As long as the apex court is strong at its stand about banning the practice, it will be difficult for the Jallikattu lovers to celebrate it this year!
