Biopics finally broke through in 2013 with the success of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Paan Singh Tomar and Shahid. While Farhan Akhtar’s portrayal of Milkha Singh won the most accolades and moolah, Irrfan Khan as athlete turned dacoit Paan Singh Tomar and Rajkummar Rao as slain lawyer Shahid also did reasonably well and appreciated by the critics. 2014 will see more directors opting for this genre. Will they play safe or will the audience see something controversial like The Dirty Picture remains to be see.
We take you through some of the projects lined up for release this year.
Kishore Kumar – Ranbir Kapoor
Kishore Kumar – An actor, singer, director, producer, composer and lyricist. Yes he was a complete entertainer. So when we wish to see him being portrayed in front of your eyes, very few can do justice. And who better to play Kishore Kumar than the superstar of this generation – Ranbir Kapoor. His boyish charm, mischief yet innocence filled-eyes make him an apt choice to portray yesteryear superstar in Anurag Basu’s official biopic on Kishore Kumar.
Mary Kom – Priyanka Chopra
Bollywood’s fascination with sports personalities refuses to die down with Sanjay Leela Bhansali next production bringing to life the struggle and rise of five-time world boxing champion Mary Kom. Priyanka Chopra will play the Olympic bronze medallist who hopefully will get rid of her firangi accent and her fake pout for the role.
Srinivas Ramanujan – R. Madhavan
Maths wizard Srinivas Ramanujan who contributed significantly to the numbers world died of illness at a tender age of 32. Despite a tragic end to his life (vegetarian food was really scarce in England during the First World War) his life has caught the eye of filmmakers from Bollywood and Tollywood and rumour mills suggest Madhavan will play the role.
M.S. Subbulakshmi – Vidya Balan Kapoor
MS Subbulakshmi was India’s first ever musician to receive the coveted Bharat Ratna. Not only an acclaimed Carnatic vocalist she was also regarded as an accomplished actor in her earlier days. The life of the Queen of music will be portrayed on the silver screen by Vidya Balan. She has already proved the mettle with her brilliant acting in past, we look forward to another beautiful portrayal from her.
Charles Shobhraj – Randeep Hooda
Should all biopics inspire us? It is time to see few bad guys in action because, lets admit, we simply love the bad guys. And what could be better than the life history of ‘bikini killer’ Charles Shobraj. The murders, motives, love life – his entire life looks like a movie plot. Actor-turned-director Pooja Bhatt has roped in Randeep Hooda and Richa Chaddha for this movie.
Some of the notable biopics made in the past
One simply cannot forget the ultimate mooch Aamir Khan sported in Ketan Mehta’s Mangal Pandey – The Rising. Though it was quite hilarious to imagine Mangal Pandey visiting a kotha and enjoying mujras. And what was that gay angle?
Chak De India’s story of Kabir Khan reclaiming his lost prestige by helping the national women’s hockey team win the World Cup is said to be loosely-based on the life of former hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi. It is touted to be one of the Shahrukh Khan’s finest performance.
Though it wasn’t an official biopic on Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani, Mani Ratnam’s Guru had Abhishek Bachchan playing the titular role. Somewhere along the making of the film Abhishek fell in love with Aishwarya and the two got married immediately after the release of the film.
‘Super Chor’ Bunty or Devinder Singh’s illegal acts might not have gone down well with the society and administrative bodies but it surely inspired director Dibakar Banerjee to make Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. The Abhay Deol-starrer remains a cult con film.
Seema Biswas’ depiction of infamous dacoit Phoolan Devi left many confused between who the real Phoolan Devi was. Shekhar Kapoor’s Bandit Queen won him accolades from the world over and moved to Hollywood. Now that is called acting and film making.
