The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscar Awards or the Oscars, every year to honour cinematic genius. The 88th Academy Awards ceremony – the Oscar Awards 2016 – was hosted by comedian Chris Rock, a decade after he last hosted the awards. 10.18 am IST: Best Actress in a Leading Role – Newcomer Brie Larson for Room!

10.06 am IST: The Oscar Award 2016 for Directing (Best Director) goes to Alejandro González Iñárritu (Alejandro G Iñárritu) for The Revenant! “I can’t believe this is happening. It is amazing to receive this award. I would like to share this with my cast, collegues and crew members who made this film possible. Leo (Leonardo DiCaprio), you are the revenant,” Inarritu said while accepting the award. The director had won the same award at the Oscar Awards 2015 for Birdman.

09:55 am IST: The Oscar Award for the Best Original Song went to Writing’s On the Wall from Bond movie Spectre (by Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes). Sam Smith dedicated his Oscar Award to the LGBT community in a moving speech! “I stand here tonight as a proud gay man, and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day,” he said.

09.50 am IST: Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight is honoured with the Best Original Score (music by the legendary Ennio Morricone) at the 88th Academy Awards. Morricone gets a standing ovation, and rightfully so.
