S Durga is finally set to release in theatres across the country on April 6th. Previously titled as Sexy Durga, the film courted controversies when it was scheduled for a screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year but was rejected by the jury for its content. The filmmaker, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, had also moved the Kerala High Court regarding this.

Now that the film is finally getting a pan-India release, the director has let bygone be bygone and has urged everyone to go watch the film.  “Feeling great. Now the controversy and hardships are over it is time for people to watch the film and see what was the reason for the unwanted controversies,” Sasidharan told a news agency. Furthermore, he said, “I request all the people who opposed and who really supported unconditionally to watch the film.”

Post getting a clearance, the film was first reportedly shown at an event in Kolkata on March 5 this year. The film has been showcased at several film festivals such as the 3rd Pesaro Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam 2017, International Film Festival of Valencia, Spain and also screened at the Jio MAMI Film Festival, where it has received accolades and rave reviews. The film features Rajshri Deshpande in the lead role and is based on the patriarchal society of Kerala.

The film has bagged the Hivos Tiger Award at the 2017 International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the Golden Apricot at Armenia’s Yerevan International Film Festival in the category International Feature Competition, 2017. It is also the only Indian film to win that title. Not just that, it has also won the Best International Feature Film award at the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico.
