We have always known about Tuberculosis (TB) as curable, but it is a potentially dangerous infectious disease. TB is caused by  Mycobacterium tuberculosis, it typically attacks the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body such as the brain and eyes. Since TB still haunts our nation Aamir Khan took to Satyamev Jayate #MumkinHai in episode 4 to ponder over  #tickingTimeBomb  Tuberculosis. Aamir stressed over the fact that should TB be treated as a national health emergency against which a war needs to be addressed by Government, doctors and society.

The episode saw a number of patients and survivors who shared their personal experience and also few doctors who threw light upon the grave situation that we are going through our nation. Dr. Zarir Udwadia, for a better understanding of  the disease pointed out the dangerous levels TB has advanced to and elaborated on different forms and stages of the disease . He stressed on the fact that MDR TB is a cause for concern . We require significant improvement in counselling and rehabilitation. If not prevented now, MDR TB can turn into an epidemic where most cases would be incurable. Can we let this happen?

Aamir says that in the war against TB, either we sail together or drown together. It is important that we join hands. India has the highest number of MDR TB patients in the world – the shameful reality of a disease that is curable A TB affected patient on an average infects 10 more people in a year. Aamir took us also to have a glimpse of New York where in the 90s TB was a major issue but within 4 years they successfully overcame the deadly disease. With a strong medical force the New York medical also helped the likes of gangsters and drug-dealers in order to overcome it. Through the show we also came to know that Improvising living conditions alone can eliminate a significant amount of the diseases today. The episode today could turn out to be helpful for everyone as public awareness through means of common man’s perception can be very helpful to understand the disease and its consequences.

The show also shared with us the national initiative of Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) and DOTS and pointed out the fundamental flaws. Despite the commendable work done by the DOTS programme, there were some shortcomings observed such as the alternate day therapy, unfeasible timings of DOTS, shortage of drugs, improper montoring and corruption in distribution of the drugs.
