It was Shekhar Kapur who gave Sridevi Mr India (1987), one film where the actress excelled and showed she can be a comedian, a seductress and an entertainer all at once. And yet, when Sridevi’s name came up at the 65th National Film Awards 2018 in the Best Actress category for Mom (2017), the filmmaker and jury member was against giving her an award. Shocking much? Shekhar Kapur announced the winners of the National Awards 2018 today, Press Information Bureau in New Delhi on Friday.
While announcing the award for late actress Sridevi, Kapur said, “The best actress is Sridevi for Mom and I promise you it is not my relationship with her. Every morning when I came here, I would ask everyone to vote once again. I would look at all the actors, talk about them and I would say, ‘there should not be Sridevi, not Sridevi’! We used to take a vote and it always came back to Sridevi. It was me who fought that it shouldn’t be Sridevi.”
Further elaborating on his reason on why he didn’t want the English Vinglish actress to win, the acclaimed filmmaker said, “We are all emotionally involved with Sridevi. But I used to say, ‘don’t give her an award because she died, it is unfair on the other girls’. They have also worked hard for 10-12 years, they too have a career,” reports a leading daily.
However, Sridevi’s MOM director Ravi Udyawar is elated and said that she worked hard on the film and the award is quite deserving. The actress’ family – including her daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi, husband Boney Kapoor and brother-in-law and co-star of many films Anil Kapoor, all expressed their gratitude for the honour bestowed on the actress. While her daughters and husband released a joint statement, Anil took to social media to share a heartwarming message that said, “She might not be among us anymore but her talent, work and memory will live on. Sri was and always will be a shining star in the sky. I know his recognition and this award will mean a lot to her, it surely means a lot to us. So thank you #NationalFilmAwards (sic).”
