Telugu artist, Sri Reddy, who had recently stripped and staged a protest to demand justice for not getting any work in Telugu film industry, was refused the membership application by the MAA and had also said that the actors, who work with Sri Reddy, will also be suspended from the association. On Thursday, hours after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of Telugu actress Sri Reddy’s allegations of sexual exploitation, the Movie Artists’ Association (MAA) lifted a ban on her. Now, all 900 members of MAA were free to work with Reddy.
Aside from lifting the ban, it also announced setting up of a Committee Against Sexual Harassment, which would meet once in three months. MAA President Shivaji Raja said the committee, comprising senior actors and filmmakers of Telugu film industry, would look into the complaints of sexual harassment. Earlier in the day, the NHRC sent notices to the Telangana government and the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry over Reddy’s allegations. The rights body took suo motu cognizance of media reports about the allegations raised by Reddy and a lack of grievance redressal mechanism for women in the film industry. Recently, Reddy had made a shocking revelation; she said Producer Suresh Babu’s son and Rana Daggubati’s brother Abhiram Daggubati had sexually exploited her. The actress, who has been making headlines from the past couple of weeks for making controversial statements on Tollywood producers in connection with casting couch, had alleged that Abhiram forced her to have sex with him at a government studio in Hyderabad and the actress had proof for the same.
