Legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra passed away on the morning of February 13 in Chennai. He was 74. He was critically ill after being admitted to a city hospital following a heart attack.
Balu was an acclaimed cinematographer, editor and screenwriter and had received the prestigious National Film Award and also the Kerala State Award for Best Cinematographer, among other honours.
Born on May 20, 1939 in Sri Lanka, Mahendra was an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune where he passed out as a gold medallist in cinematography.
His debut film was in Kannada but he went on to direct over 20 movies in several languages. His blockbuster films include Moondram Pirai and the acclaimed Sadma – starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi.
