Will palazzos, half sarees continue as fashion trends in 2014?
With gals ready to experiment and break from the conventional art of styling, the year ahead looks promising.
Trending Now
Fashion does not die but simply wear out, something that’s out of flavour in one season can return with a bang in the next. We saw this in 2013 — some old classics making a comeback and also some new trends emerging. Some of the more memorable fashion statements included Sonam Kapoor’s huge nose ring at Cannes and Deepika Padukone’s nerdy glasses. Other things in vogue were half sarees and palazzos. With gals ready to experiment and break from the conventional art of styling, the year ahead looks promising. Here’s what was really hot in 2013:
Palazzo – Deepika’s flowy pants from Cocktail
2014 truly belonged to Ms Padukone who not only ruled the box office with blockbusters like Ram-Leela, Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Diwani and Race 2 but also showcased her fashionable side. Her palazzos in Cocktail really brought the garment back in the limelight but we have to remember that this look isn’t for everyone.
Style tip: Wearing palazzos can be like a double-edged sword – if you wear it right you’ll look like a fashionista, but wear it wrong and you will look like a wannabe trying to ride a fad! So keep it simple – go for a material with cotton fabric. Don’t wear chiffon or silk as they stick to the body and can look quite vulgar We suggest you team it up with a corset top or a white or ivory coloured shirt. Accessorize with junk jewellery to pull off the laid back look!
Nath or the Nose Ring – return of the ring
The nose ring was crazy in a few years ago when tennis sensation Sania Mirza was often spotted sporting but then the craze died down. Recently, style icon Sonam Kapoor brought it back in vogue by wearing a huge nath at Cannes. We must say she did steal everyone’s thunder with that amazing fashion statement. Her nose act inspired quite a few of her Bollywood contemporaries, including Vidya Balan who sadly just couldn’t pull it off like her younger contemporary. But putting Bollywood aside, the nose ring is catching on with girls since it beautifully combines tradition with modernity.
Style tip: You just don’t have to opt for big nose rings, you can try out smaller plain-looking ones in vibrant colours.
Half sarees – the ultimate semi-traditional look
Indian girls always look gorgeous in traditional sarees but draping one on and carrying it off can be a one hell of a job. This year saw a number of people promoting half sarees including Deepika Padukone in Chennai Express and Kalki Koechelin, Anushka Sharma and other divas during their movie premiers.
Style tip: Your closet should at least have a few in contrasting colours. Half sarees in net material and also floral prints are in demand.
Go Nude – go natural with colours
Going easy on colours is quite the rage. The latest in thing is going nude – not without clothes – but choosing subtle shades like pastel or ivory . The reasoning is that girls are beautiful naturally and there should be nothing artificial. At least that’s what they want people to think.
Style tip: Opt for make-up, shoes, bags and dresses in shades of pastel, ivory, pale or off-white.
Sheer Fashion – go crazy on translucent colours
Sheer fashion refers to fabric made of nets which gives a semi-transparent look. Right from Hollywood to Bollywood, from offices to parties, this piece of fabric has made its presence felt. Be it sarees, floor-length gowns, dresses, shirts, tops, blouses; sheer simply ruled everywhere.
Style Tip: Wearing a sheer can be challenging, as layering can completely destroy the essence of a sheer outfit whereas too much exposure can come across as crass and embarrassing. Go for sheer fabric in colours like black, grey or white and team them up with high-waist pants, scarves and loafers to look oh-so-chic!
Accessories – you are incomplete without them
You can have the most gorgeous dress, the coolest bag but without accessories your look is just incomplete. You might think they’re unnecessary or not required but they work like tadka for your dal.
Style Tip: The good thing about accessories is anything goes. It could be a long chain with the mard mooch as a pendant or mid-finger rings or several beads strung into one around your hand. Some must-have accessories one should include hair bands, chains, anklets, junk bangles, scarves (plain or floral) or thumb rings.
Of course fashion is not definitive and it varies from person to person. What works for one person might not work for another. But be bold and creative, anything can be fashionable if you can pull it off! Have a very stylish year ahead!
