Which are filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s biggest flop movies?

Ram Gopal Varma flop films

Ram Gopal Varmais known for his eccentric and different filmmaking skills. He was once called the game changer of Hindi cinema. He was once a great filmmaker who gave us films like Satya, Rangeela and Company, but he seems to have lost his way. On his birthday on April 7, we take a look at some of the major duds that he delivered in Bollywood, including Agyaat, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag and the like.

Department

Even with an A-list actor like Amitabh Bachchan, the movie was doomed big time. People make a mockery of the film saying that the director probably made the whole movie when he was drunk. The cinematography is completely sloshed. The action sequences lack a sense of dynamism. The whole movie turned out to be dry and dead.

Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag

It wasn’t a clever idea to remake the iconic Bollywood film Sholay. But RGV did pay tribute to the classic movie in his one-of-a-kind bad taste. Yet again this one starred Amitabh Bachchan as the villain. The much hyped gimmick was indeed a dud. And also Ajay Devgn and Nisha Kothari turned out to be the worst lead pair. Roping in South superstar Mohanlal as a protagonist did no good to the movie.

Not a Love Story

This movie was inspired by by the gruesome murder of Neeraj Grover in 2008. The movie has been made in bad taste to bring the real-life crime scenario onto celluloid. Nobody can make a film like RGV does – he has a different approach to every film, in a good or in this case, bad way. Deepak Dobriyal and Mahie Gill were the leading pair in this movie.

Darling

The movie was inspired by Blithe Spirit, a classic about how a couple deals with the return of a man’s ex-wife’s spirit. But when RGV tried to recreate the story, it was all creepy scares and screams. And with Fardeen Khan and Esha Deol clueless as to what they were supposed to do, it furthered ruined Darling. But the songs of the movie were appreciated averagely as compared to the story of the movie.

Agyaat

This supernatural thriller was ridiculously funny. RGV re-launched his muse Nisha Kothari now as Priyanka Kothari. With very clichéd and lame dialogues like ‘Raat honewali hai‘ and ‘Hum ek ek karke mar rahe hain‘, the movie is spectacularly bad!

Rann

This one also has a series of bad performances except for Amitabh Bachchan who prominently stood out among the rest of the cast of Rann. The movie was a take on the lowly state of journalism today. This is an out of form creative and slightly dramatised version. There are too many close-up shots with the background score blatantly daunting and exaggerated.

Contract

Even though he is known for his great underworld based movies like Company and Satya, the film Contract ended up being a plain badly made movie. It was about a war between two underworld gangs. The film starred Adhvik Mahajan and small-screen actress Shama Sikander was roped in to up the glam quotient with an item number.

Phoonk

Child artiste Ahsaas Channa was the focus of this horror film. This movie has its roots in black magic. The performances were decent and Ahsaas also played a believable character. The trailer had challenged people to watch this movie alone in the theatre without being scared to win a lumpsum amount of money. No one knows if anybody took up the challenge! The movie didn’t do well because of its ending. Even then, RGV came out with a sequel, Phoonk 2.
