Born on January 24, 1945 in Nagpur, Subhash Ghai turned 60 today. Known as the Showman in Bollywood for his stylish movies and also his personal style, Ghai has delivered several blockbusters like Hero, Karma and Ram Lakhan and some flops. He is known for introducing fresh heroines and churning out the best out of his actors. He has also worked with veteran Dilip Kumar in a number of films, and brought together Dilip Sa’ab and Raaj Kumar in Saudagar again after their 1959 film Paigham.
The director’s last few years have been especially trying, with movies like Yuvvraaj, Kisna and Yaadein and his experimental film Black and White flopping (with the exception of his production Joggers’ Park that was appreciated). Ghai is now looking forward to his new film Kaanchi…. and will also produce a few films, including a Punjabi one. His company Mukta Arts has also made Marathi films.
What is endearing about Ghai is his love for cameos in his own films, just like Hollywood director Alfred Hitchcock. Today, he is owner of film school Whistling Woods International that has also diversified into fashion schooling with celebrity designer Neeta Lulla.
